Pakistan’s Agriculture Sector Sees Significant Slowdown in 2QFY25

Pakistan’s agriculture sector growth rate has significantly dropped to 1.1% in 2QFY25, compared to 6.1% in 2QFY24, signaling a troubling downturn.

According to Topline Securities, this underperformance is primarily due to a sharp 31% decline in the cotton crop and a 15.4% decrease in maize production.

Agriculture’s Role in Pakistan’s Economy
Pakistan is home to 8.2 million farm families, responsible for fulfilling the basic food and nutrition needs of an estimated population of 212 million people. With 65% of the population residing in rural areas, the majority depend on agriculture, either directly or indirectly, for their livelihood.

Agriculture remains a critical sector, employing over 37% of the country’s labor force and contributing nearly 30% to the nation’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
